Adolescence is characterized by psychological changes that affect an individual’s sense of identity, their self-consciousness and their relationships with others, particularly their peer group and friends. This image depicts the ‘social brain’ - the network of brain regions that are involved in understanding and relating to others. As these parts of the brain are still undergoing development, teenagers may still sometimes misinterpret others’ facial expressions and mental states.
