This tree-like structure is based on imaging of the hippocampus in a mouse brain (though here it is flipped vertically). In a mouse, many of the hippocampal cells respond to place: they fire bursts of action potentials when it passes through a certain environment – not so unlike the emotions or associations that might come flooding to us as we walk through a wood.
