Parkinson’s involves the death of cells in the ‘sustancia nigra’ (here, the stooped man’s black waistcoat). This causes slowness, imbalance and tremor. Deep brain stimulation that pinpoints the ‘globus pallidus interna’ (here, the bulls-eye) has been shown to improve co-ordination of patients’ eye movements. The cortex here, is clad in ‘micrographia’, spidery or cramped handwriting that is a secondary motor symptom of Parkinson’s.
